Academic Trips

Ski Trip

The annual Oaklands ski trip is a major event on the calendar for Year 12,13 and 9 students. The trip takes place during the February half term with the students leaving school on Friday and arriving back on the following Saturday. The school has always used coach travel as the means of transport and although this results in a journey of approximately 20 hours, it does provide the students the opportunity to experience other activities away from the ski slopes.

The trip gives students the opportunity to experience a different country and a sport that can only be truly appreciated in the majestic European Alps. Many students enjoy the challenge of skiing and the conquering of the resort summit is the aim for all of our students!

Iceland Trip

In July each year, the Geography Department organises a trip to Iceland for 5 days. The visit is open to GCSE and A-Level Geography students and offers the opportunity to visit The Blue Lagoon, climb Eldfell volcano on the Vestmannaeyjar Islands, explore the ‘Golden Circle’, walk on the Solheimajokull glacier and much more. The trip gives the students real life experience of the Coasts, Glaciers and Hazards topics that we teach them at school.

Dorset Trip

In Year 12, A-Level Geography students will have the opportunity to visit Dorset for 3 days to support their individual investigation (NEA-worth 20% of their final grade) which must include data collected in the field. Students will look at Coastal management at Barton-on-sea, beach surveys at Ringstead, sand dune transects at Studland as well as human enquiries including a study at Poundbury near Dorchester. We also take the opportunity to visit places they study as part of the course, including Hurst Castle Spit, Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, Chesil Beach, Kimmeridge and Portland Bill.
