Culture Week

In late Autumn the Oaklands community celebrates our annual school Culture Week. Originally started here at Oaklands by the previous Year 11 student leaders, Culture Week is an impressive celebration of the cultural diversity of our school.

The week is peppered with different activities for the students to take part in, each raising money for charity. These included a Staff vs Sixth Form netball match, and a food market with different food brought in from across the schools’ diverse student body. However, the events earlier in the week are just a precursor to the finale, the Culture Day show. The show is an opportunity for students to take part in a vibrant showcase of traditional dress, dance and music. In the evening parents are invited to see an equally vibrant and impressive performance offering an insight into the students’ hard work and sharing the celebrations with the wider Oaklands family.

The schools community creates an atmosphere of warmth and friendliness. Aside from the contributions to a good cause, (the money raised throughout the week supports out partnership with St John’s School, Korogocho, Kenya), Culture Week offers a new, fresh way of engaging students in the important conversation surrounding celebrating each other’s culture. For the new year 7s the week is just a taste of the sort of events the school offers its students.
