The University of Reading developed the COVID-19: Helping Young People Manage Low Mood and Depression course for young people with low mood and depression and their parents and carers, or anyone who has contact with young people during the coronavirus pandemic.

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) ADVICE AND SUPPORT FOR PARENTS AND CARERS – The NSPCC has created an online Hub providing advice and support for parents and carers during the coronavirus outbreak. Content includes: information on keeping children safe from abuse; tips and advice to help parents working from home; and ways to talk to a child who is anxious or worried about coronavirus.

CORONAVIRUS ONLINE SAFETY – The National Crime Agency (NCA) CEOP command has launched a campaign to help keep children safe online during the coronavirus pandemic. The #OnlineSafetyAtHome campaign contains home activity packs with 15-minute activities for parents and carers to do with their children using CEOP’s Thinkuknow educational resources. New activities will be launched fortnightly. The NCA has warned of a spike in online child sex offending during the coronavirus crisis. Children spending more time on the internet at home has created a “perfect storm” for abusers to take advantage of the pandemic.

CORONAVIRUS SUPPORTING CHILDREN/YOUNG PEOPLE’S MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING – Public Health England (PHE) has published advice for parents and carers on looking after the mental health and wellbeing of children or young people during the coronavirus outbreak. The guidance covers: helping children and young people cope with stress; how children and young people of different ages may react; children and young people who are accessing mental health services; children and young people with learning disabilities; autistic children and young people; children and young people who care for others; and bullying. The guidance will be updated in line with the changing situation.

THINKUKNOW National Crime Agency Online Safety Command & Education Service. In its commitment to support to professionals, children and their families, ThinkUknow has now released its second #OnlineSafetyAtHome education packs for children 4 – 14+ years to share with parents and carers.

HOME GROWN SKILLS, a completely free resource bank for parents and teachers to support young people’s wellbeing and personal development during this period.

The series of activity sheets are designed to take between 20-50 minutes each and can easily be adapted for different ages and levels. The resources can be used independently by a child, need only a pen and paper and are fun to complete

BARNARDOS, has launched a vital new support service which should make a positive difference to the lives of many Black, Asian and minority ethnic children, young people and their families impacted by Covid-19.

This is a UK-wide helpline which will focus on issues specifically affecting children, young people and families from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities who, as we all know, have been hard hit by the pandemic. The new service is a free telephone helpline and web chat facility for children, young people and families from these communities who are suffering the long-lasting and wide-ranging impact of Covid-19. Barnardos specialist advisors will aim to provide on-going support on a complex range of issues including mental health, bereavement, family break-down, neglect, back to school, parenting advice, counselling, family stress, discrimination, barriers to services and more.
