GOLD AWARD PRESENTATION AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE – 17TH MAY 2018 - Judith Hoar, Duke of Edinburgh Co-ordinator

On a bright and sunny morning Mrs Belinda Ludlam and I were delighted to accompany a group of Oaklands Sixth Form students and one former student together with their invited guest to the gardens of Buckingham Palace to receive the prestigious Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award in the presence of HRH The Duke of York, HRH The Earl of Wessex and HRH The Countess of Wessex.

Time was allowed to visit the impressive gardens and lake of the palace before 1,700 participants gathered and were divided into smaller groups of 50.  A number of 'celebrities' were spotted in the crowd including Alan Titchmarsh, David Mitchell and our presenter Laura Wright. Each group of 50 was allocated a presenter who talked to the participants about their own career path and asked the participants about their experience of the Award.  Our group presenter was Laura Wright, (above) a soprano singer who often can be seen singing the anthems at many major sporting events and is very involved in charity work particularly the Invictus Games for which she also wrote the anthem.  Laura was persuaded to sing for us, an unaccompanied rendering of Ave Maria, it sounded wonderful and she managed to sing while the two bands (The Royal Marines and the Brigade of Gurkhas) were both taking a break from performing!
